Astrology Transits Explained: The Sky Talking to Your Chart
Your birth chart is a snapshot — frozen at the moment you were born. But the real planets keep moving. Transits are what happens when those moving planets form angles (aspects) to the fixed positions in your birth chart. They're the engine behind astrological timing: why a particular month "feels" a certain way.

How a transit works
Say you were born with your Sun at 10° Leo. When the transiting Sun returns to 10° Leo each year, that's your solar return (your birthday, astrologically). When transiting Saturn forms a square to that natal Sun, astrologers read it as a period of pressure, responsibility and growth. The natal point stays put; the moving planet does the work.
Fast planets vs slow planets
- Fast movers (Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars) create short, everyday shifts — moods, conversations, bursts of energy. The Moon changes sign every ~2.5 days.
- Slow movers (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) create the big chapters — the ones people remember for years. A Saturn transit can define an entire season of life.
When astrologers talk about a "major transit," they almost always mean a slow planet contacting one of your personal points (Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or a personal planet).
The aspects that matter
Transits are read through aspects — the angle between the moving planet and your natal point:
- Conjunction (0°) — a fresh start on that theme; the most intense.
- Trine & sextile (120° / 60°) — flow and opportunity, things click.
- Square & opposition (90° / 180°) — friction and turning points that push growth.
How to actually use transits
- Know your chart first. Transits only make sense against your natal placements — start with reading your birth chart.
- Watch the slow planets. Track where Jupiter and Saturn are relative to your Sun, Moon and Ascendant.
- Look at the calendar, not the day. Big transits build over weeks or months — think seasons, not single dates.
